Ryan Birrenbach

The Plan:

The Plan, after graduation, is to find a graphic design job in north Utah. The location is not for sure, as long as it is in between a rural city and a heavier populated city. Struck is a great graphic design firm so they are my first choice, they will be able to open some doors for me. I have to stay in Utah for at least three years, then it's time to leave. Either California, Colorado, Hawaii, or somewhere not in the plan. Just not Utah.

Artist Statement:

Style and concept is what makes a strong graphic designer. I strive to discover a balance between rule and creativity. Albert Einstein and Shepard Fairey all found this perfect balance which is how they changed their field of study and are remembered today. To ensure my success, I use simplistic elements of design. Staying dedicated and thinking conceptually is how I achieve success in design. Whether it is the way the grip tape on my skateboard shimmers in the sunlight or the smell of a sharpie marker making its first stroke. I am inspired by everything that surrounds me and always stay open minded. By staying a creative, confident, and having a goal oriented background, I will achieve my desired success.

Chey Rasmussen

My Plan: After graduation, I would like to get an internship at a respected and prestigious firm/studio to get some solid connections and real work experience. Preferably this work will be connected to the audiovisual industry, whether it be in advertising or entertainment. This will help me get my foot into the right doors for starters.

My Resume:

Artist Statement:

My brain has two parts, and they're pals. One part likes imagination, craft, passion, laughter, and beauty. The other part likes logic, deep thinking, technical knowledge, and attention to detail. They've joined forces to tell stories, mainly through the mediums of motion graphics and interactive presentation.
The first time I played The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time on Nintendo 64, I was enthralled by the vast scale of it and the grandeur of the quest upon which it allowed me to embark. Even more amazing to me was the fact that somebody had made and populated that world. They had imagined and then designed every part of it, allowing me, the player, to satisfy my pre-teen thirst for adventure and exploration. If others could design something that was so engrossing, why couldn't I? I had ideas that I was excited about but they didn't feel quite at home locked up in my own head. I wanted them to be experienced by other people. This desire to bring ideas to life propelled me into design.
For me, design is much more than drawing, setting type, and printing. It's also much more than understanding how to use computer software. It's a deep and comprehensive process I can use to express myself and to help others do likewise. It's a way of combining ideas into one and turning the result of that combination into a reality. Design is the way that I fulfill my lifelong desire to pull my ideas out of my head and put them where people can experience them.
I have chosen to pursue motion and interactive design more than other mediums because they maximally satisfy all of my own creative and exploratory needs; they require imaginative and innovative concepts, beautiful imagery, as well as analysis, tinkering, and learning.

The "Big Break:"

I called a Motion design studio in Portland called Cardboard Castle. They seemed happy to hear from me and we chatted for a minute. They regrettably aren't looking for junior designers at the moment, but they still encouraged me to send them my resume and website when it's all ready.

I was encouraged by a former coworker, Hyrum Mertlich, to apply at Skywest, where he works, as an instructional designer. I applied on November 1.

I had a job interview/lunch at Winger's with Hyrum's Boss, Josh Howe, on November 8. It went well. If I get the job I'll be able to fly wherever I want, whenever I want. Sounds pretty groovy.

I got an email from Skywest on November 16, asking about my schedule for next semester and hours of work availability. I haven't been extended a job offer yet, but according to Hyrum, they haven't hired anyone yet because they're right in the thick of their busiest time of year. So I'll probably hear from them when they aren't having such a crazy time.

Work Samples

Capstone Project Proposal:

I will design and put together album art and an animated video for Soleviio (Connor Riley,) a musician and electronic production and design major at Berklee College of Music.
Connor uses a Nintendo Game Boy to create music and is preparing to release an album titled “Daydreams and Dragon Kings.” The album art I create will be the official art for that album. In addition, I will create an animated music video for “The Boy Who Fought The Lightning,” one of the songs featured in the album.
To reflect the retro aesthetic and nostalgic aspect of his music, the general style I will be using in this project will be pixel art inspired by video games of the 80s and early 90s.
I have been in contact with Connor and we have discussed some ideas which are contained in this proposal.

Print Portfolio:

I will be doing two formats for my print portfolio. A larger, presentation-book style format for myself to keep handy, and a series of postcard-style prints kept inside of a classy box to give away or to leave with potential employers.

Friday, August 31, 2012

The Plan

Ideally, I'd like to work as a concept artist for a videogame company in the Southern California area after I graduate in May. Washington or Oregon would be my other choices for location. This semester I'm going to focus on putting together a portfolio that will help me achieve that goal.

Message: Dear IEF,
I am an artist at Southern Utah University.  I am studying painting/drawing/ and printmaking.  My goal in life as an artist is to be a successful wildlife artist in support of the conservation and protection of endangered species and all foundations dedicated to support and preserve the lives of animals around the world.  I am aware of the issues in Africa with elephants ruining crops, especially in Botswana.  I am also aware and concerned about poaching of all animals but especially elephants.  I would be honored if IEF would consider my life mission and contact me if there is anything that I could do in order to help.  Thank you so much for your time.

Dear Mary,

Thank you very much for your inquiry. The Balboa Art Conservation Center
is a nonprofit regional conservation center devoted to the preservation of
material culture in the areas of art and history. We offer pre-program
internships to individuals interested in becoming art conservators and who
are within one year of completing the requirements to enter a graduate
program in art conservation. It sounds like you are building a good
background in fine art and if you are interested in becoming an art
conservator, I would recommend looking at the American Institute for the
Conservation of Historic and Artistic Works (www.conservation-us.org).
This website will give you excellent information about what an art
conservator does and the training involved.

It also sounds like you are interested in the conservation of wildlife,
and I would suggest contacting organizations such as the Wildlife
Conservation Society (www.wcs.org) for more information and career
opportunities.

Please let us know if you have any more questions. I wish you the best of
luck in your endeavors!

Other than these, i just researched other organizations such as Wildlife Conservation Society, Audobon, and a couple independent societies around the U.S. Most of them don't directly have internships, but they accept donations, and i'm sure i could do volunteer artwork for them. Since then, since it is important to me i've been signing acts online for a paper trail since that is what i can do for now. here are my saved emails from all those.

I know i can't put them on my resume, but if i ever go into an interview i would like to have evidence that i have made some sort of effort

A legendary thank you!

Dear Mary,
Thanks so much for writing your representatives! Our campaign is picking up speed every day and you've helped bring us a little closer to getting the bison elected our National Mammal.
Now, will you get others involved in our campaign? Just take a few more moments out of your day to forward the note below to friends and family.
Thanks so much.

Hi -
I'm not sure if you've heard about this, but right now there's a campaign to elect the bison our National Mammal. We already have a national emblem – it's the bald eagle – but the spot of National Mammal is still open.
Bison are the largest land mammal in the country. Their grazing patterns shaped the Great Plains, and they've been important for centuries of history and culture. And you might not have known this, but today there are bison in every state in America. What other mammal is better at symbolizing America?
Check out this video PSA for the bison, then, send a message to your representative asking them to enact the National Bison Legacy Act. I just did it and I was hoping you would too.
Thanks!

Thank you, thank you!

Hey -
It appalls me just to think about this, but poachers seeking ivory are killing elephants in record numbers. In fact, 2011 was the deadliest year in decades for elephants across Africa.
It's a big problem. And to make matters worse, a House of Representatives committee just recommended slashing funding for elephants and other imperiled wildlife through the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service. These urgent funds for anti-poaching law enforcement won't be a priority unless our lawmakers hear that constituents like us are demanding action.
Just click through to this page and send a letter to your member of Congress on behalf of vulnerable elephants: https://secure3.convio.net/wcs/site/Advocacy?cmd=display&page=UserAction&id=477
I took action already, and I really hope you'll join me.
Thanks so much.

Dear Mary:
Thank you for recently contacting Senator Lee.  He always appreciates input from fellow Utahns.  As you may know, the United States Senate is in recess until November 13th and thus, no votes are scheduled until that time.  However, I will make sure that your thoughts and concerns regarding S. 3208, the Multinational Species Conservation Funds Semipostal Stamp Reauthorization Act, are relayed to the Senator.
Please feel free to reach out to our office if we can be of assistance in the future.  Again, thank you for writing.
Best regards,

Pete Blair

Mary,
We're so glad you are on board. Together with President Obama, Secretary Clinton and YOU, we're waging a global fight against the illegal wildlife trade. But we need an entire movement if we're going to turn the tide on this rampant problem threatening to wipe elephants, tigers, and so many other species off the map.
Will you get others to join? Spread the word on Facebook or Twitter. Or, you can forward the note below to family and friends.
Thanks!

Hi,
President Obama and Secretary of State Clinton are in Southeast Asia right now meeting with heads of state. And for possibly the first time in history, wildlife is high on their agenda. They'll be discussing ways these nations can thwart poachers and reduce the insatiable demand for ivory and other wildlife body parts such as tiger bones and pelts.
It's an uphill battle, but I'm so glad to know we have two of the world's top diplomats standing up for tigers, elephants, and other wildlife driven to extinction by poaching.
These talks are laying critical groundwork for trade negotiations happening in early December that could build ground-breaking environmental and conservation policies directly into our agreements with these countries.
We need to make sure President Obama and Secretary Clinton know folks at home think they're doing the right thing. Will you send them a letter of support?
Thanks!

The Plan

I don't care how I get to paint as long as I get to. Creating wildlife illustrations/art has been an idea I have considered.  I don't have a specific place I want to live.  I wouldn't mind living in Colorado or in the mid-west.  Utah isn't somewhere I particularly care to stay.  If I am successful in creating a portfolio to promote my skills as an artist so that I am hired in a studio to do art for someone else, or freelance work, I would be happy.  I don't like the idea of creating art for a major corporation only to promote a product.  Whether it is for printmaking, painting or drawing, as long as I am able to continue to do those things and make money to survive I'll be fine.

I do have a plan.  I want to become a conservation artist.  Creating art to help in the conservation of wildlife worldwide and also the conservation of our forests and oceans.  This is something I care deeply about.  Finding a job where I could consistently create are for this purpose would be my dream.  I think at some point in most people's lives they want to become a photographer for National Geographic, but this point came when I was eight.  I thought if I did I would contribute to helping everyone become aware of the beauty of wildlife and nature.  Whether I am painting pieces for a charity auction, or designing signs and posters for a protest against illegal poaching, I will find joy.

Artist Statement

Expressing myself through art is more about inspiration than anything else. It is important to me to have an emotional experience with art than to create a piece of art that is solely to cover a bare spot on the wall. I aspire to create art to move the viewer. I want people to feel something when they see my art. Whether my art makes them angry, happy, sad, or just peaceful. If my art is used just to look at, for the colors, design, or content that would be fine too. If someone views a piece of my art and remembers it for more than one day, recalling the image and the impact it made on them, I will feel successful.

Inspiration for my work comes from all around me. Gestures from people and their expressions. Most of my inspiration comes from what I find to be beautiful, peaceful or it develops from a strong emotional response I have to something. The beauty of nature is the essence of my artwork. Details in cloud formation, textures in tree bark, the movement of water can all be inspiration for a piece of work.

Most of my art pieces are made from an urge to draw attention to a certain animal, tree or a beautiful element on earth. I hope it inspires to find the beauty in all things on this earth. My art is often a call to those who have become lost in the world of technology and have forgotten about the natural beauty of the earth.

I don't feel the necessity to explain what elements in my artwork means. It is a very personal thing for me. Explaining also sometimes takes away from what i want the viewer to see and feel. I want their experience to be personal without any influences from my own opinions.
